looking cautiously optimistic

August 15, 2005

We went to see a couple more wedding venues on Saturday: The Faculty Club at Berkeley and Madison’s at Lake Merritt Hotel. The weekend before that, we saw Berkeley City Club.

I really love Madison’s — it’s just beautiful, the view is fantastic, and it’s a local business, so it has some relevance to us and our lives. We made up a spreadsheet this weekend of the various different options we have at the different places. There is no conclusive answer yet. I hope we can decide soon.

ETA: My friend is selling her wedding dress. She bought another one that suits her better, so she’s selling the one she had picked out before. See the ad here and mention me to her if you decide to get the dress. 🙂

“I am getting married in Las Vegas and realized this dress is too ornate for a destination wedding.”

Huh? Who knew there were so many rules…

It’s when everyone (including the bride and groom) fly (or otherwise travel) elsewhere for their wedding. They generally have the wedding at a hotel what has a wedding/reception package. Popular destinations include Hawaii, some Carribean island or another, Las Vegas. Often, people do this because their guests are coming from all over the place and people think they will enjoy the destination more. Also, it saves money if the couple was going to go to that place for their honeymoon anyway.

A good friend of mine got married in the Bahamas, and I was the best man. The resort handled just about everything, exlcluding the dress. They did the tux rental, pictures, dinner, the works. They even did her hair. That’s definately the way to go for anyone who’s looking for a hassle-free wedding. It was beautiful and everyone was really happy with the results.

My friend got married at a local church and had her reception at Madison’s. Her photos around Lake Merritt were gorgeous. Definitely a good spot. Since her wedding they’ve changed management and others I know who have tried to book that location had difficulty with the attached hotel accommodating out of town guests, but there are so many other local hotels/motels, I don’t see why it should deter you from seriously considering the place. A sunset reception would be gorgeous there!

Often, people do this because their guests are coming from all over the place and people think they will enjoy the destination more.

Or … people whose mother-in-laws to be drive them nuts dictating the rules and regs of the wedding will run off to the islands to get married. Of course, these people also end up throwing big parties to placate said mother in law, but it all works out in the end.

When Rachel and I went to Jamaica for our anniversary in May, they were having weddings on the beach at the resort everyday. It was pretty awesome and a few we saw had large groups of family and friends with them staying at the resort.

I was about to make a comment about how Sandals resorts don’t accept gay couples (male or female), when I decided that I should verify my info before presenting it. A quick web search informed me that as of last October they have actually reversed their ban.

I had the exact same thought, Internet search, verification process. LOL
