a poet’s rejection

October 9, 2005

I read this beautifully written, politely worded rejection by a poet named Sharon Olds of an invitation issued by Laura Bush for the National Book Festival. I don’t know this poet, but I was moved by her simple words and her pained refusal to “break bread” with someone who represents an administration that she believes is doing great harm. It’s not filled with vitriol, but instead, a certain sadness that to me rang true.

The sad thing is, you know there are no words that can be written for Laura or George Bush to give a flying fuck about anything.

I read about that a couple of weeks ago on a blog that I frequent. Standing ovation for that woman, certainly. Sadly, as we know GW and Laura don’t read their own mail, they probably never even heard about it. Chances are, they probably didn’t even know who she was.
