Another generically-titled update

July 1, 2009

Let’s see… Back pain is increasing in proportion to weight gain, which is to be expected. Vision is definitely a little on the blurry side. Hands and feet experience some swelling for about an hour or two a day, depending on my position, but has not been as bad as the one time when I was visiting my best friend in May.

The biggest unexpected thing from the last two weeks is pain in my hands, near my thumb joint. I think it’s because I have been using my hands a lot more to compensate for the lack of ability to use my abdominal muscles to sit/stand up or even roll over. It’s amazing how the body works in unacknowledged concert; it’s only when you have reduced function in any one part that you can truly appreciate the well-orchestrated machine the body is. I’m sure some of the pain in the hands is also due to a bit of RSI that is exacerbated by the swelling of the extremities.

The baby himself has been very active, which is really fun. He seems to shift around a lot when I roll over. I think he’s been waking me up at around 6am every morning. Or maybe I’ve been waking him up? He also is fairly active after I have a meal. So far, it’s just an incredibly neat, stupefying experience, rather than a painful one, so I am enjoying it as much as I can. It’s amazing to see my belly jump around every so often. I hadn’t expected to see this much movement externally in the second trimester (which is coming to an end soon), but it’s really cool.

Our friends H&S have said we can borrow their infant carseat and breast pump, as they will be just transistioning off them when our little guy arrives, if he’s not too early, so this is great for us. We picked up some baby clothes, a floor gym thingy, and a Bumbo seat, the last of which we’ve lent to H&S for now, since we won’t need it for at least two or three months after the baby is born.

I have to go in to do the glucose test for gestational diabetes this week. Fun! 😀

Sounds like things are going along pretty well. I’m sorry for all of your aches and pains. I’m escaping with a much easier pregnancy I think.

That said, I have yet to feel the baby move, and I just passed the 20 week mark. I hope I can feel it soon.

I only was sure of feeling kicks when I got into week 22. I had vague and uncertain feelings in my stomach for about a week, then suddenly, in the space of a day, became really, really concrete. Then a couple of days later, I didn’t feel anything so I panicked, but the kicking and squirming resumed the next day.

And sometimes, it really truly does feel like gas. Heh.

So… 20 week, yeah? Are you guys going to find out the sex? 😀

Oh my god, we haven’t talked to you in far too long. Not only are we going to find out, we did find out! I put it into twitter but I guess you didn’t see: we’re having a girl!

Thanks for the reassurance about not being able to feel the baby move. I’ll continue to be patient.

Oh wait, I am insane! I totally saw that tweet! And even commented on it! And even had Seppo talk about arranged marriages! I can only blame pregnancy brain. I totally knew — just had a brain fart! I’m such a dummy.

I have a couple of pieces of my nieces’ clothes that my sister sent over that I can give you. 🙂 She sent them before we knew our baby’s sex.

You are way ahead of us in acquiring baby stuff. We have the crib & mattress — and that’s about it! We’re not sure what to do about the stroller… the choices are overwhelming.

But it is cool to feel the baby moving around, isn’t it? It feels so alien in some ways… and yet so incredible. All my girlfriends who recently had babies said the thing they missed the most about being pregnant is feeling the baby move.

Definitely feels alien! And incredible. Sometimes, I am startled by the reality of there being a baby inside me. I know I should be used to the idea by now, but I find myself completely befuddled every three days or so. 🙂

We’ve only had one shopping binge, and it was at a neighborhood garage sale. Everything else has been due to the generosity of friends who already had babies. I love them so much; they are so generous. 🙂 I think we’ll be registering some time this month for some small items that I know long-distance relatives will want to pick up for us.
