phone

August 8, 2005

Sometimes (like this morning), when I’m on the phone letting it ring and ring in hopes that someone will pick up eventually on the other end, I forget who I had been trying to reach by the time it gets picked up/goes to voicemail. The same thing happens when I’m on hold. I have to constantly remind myself who I was going to talk to and why, or I end up sputtering nonsense or hanging up out of embarrassment.

Talk about ADD.

I was on hold with a Target about a month back and put on hold. By the time someone picked up, I had let my mind wander to wanting to order a pizza and I asked the Target employee for a large pie.
She hung up and I was on hold for like 5 minutes only to be deemed, in 5 seconds, as a prank call.

I lose concentration now in mid-sentance too.

“Wait…what was I just talking about? Oh yeah, wait no…ok yeah, so then the purple monkey dishwashers started attacking…”

I was practicing yoga this morning via DVD, and the disembodied voice said something about “being in the moment,” and I realized that being in the moment is something I really need to work on. Forgetting what I was calling about while on hold is just the tip of the iceburg. :/

I do the same thing all the time, considering most of my work day is spent on the phone to various people. I also forget mid sentence what I’m talking about and that’s much worse. Sometimes when I’m calling someone or on the phone, I’ll start listening to something on the radio in my office and stop talking completely. It’s embarassing.
