American Red Cross – Preparing for and Responding to Hurricane Katrina
Make a donation if you can (and want to — heh). You can surely skip out on your overpriced coffee or morning donut for a few weeks, neh? (Well, you can keep your antioxidant-rich coffee. How about giving up smoking for a few weeks?) Or maybe that novel/movie/video game you were gonna get. That can probably wait. Uh… unless you were buying books in order to gear up for NaNoWriMo… but I’m sure you can find some free resources.
Eh, I was gonna make some haranguing remark to try to guilt trip you, but that’s crap. Either you wanna and this is just a reminder, or you don’t and will do something else with your time and resources. And that’s fine too. We all have our own thing. So let’s all hang our and sing in a human chain around this tree that we call earth. *shoots self*
If it makes you feel better, let’s assume that each person who refused to leave had a kid who had no choice in the matter who would have known better than to stay if left to their own devices. 😀 So the money goes to the kid with good decision making skills.
From NY Times:
“Clarence Naquin was 6 years old when he and his family decided to make it through Hurricane Betsy in 1965, hunkering down in their single story house outside of New Orleans until the last minute and then getting out fast.
But what happened that day was a lesson that Mr. Naquin, now 47, never forgot, and the memory propelled him, his now elderly parents and his wife to flee Hurricane Katrina over the weekend and take refuge in Texas.”
See? People learn. Good on you, Mr. Naquin.
If only there was a way to make a donation that specifically excludes people that *chose* to stay when they could have left. Alas!
