Memory

May 4, 2006

I read some tips on improving memory on Real Simple via LifeHacker.

I think I do most of these things already, but I find more and more that lately, I can’t recall people’s names, and more and more often, things are “on the tip of my tongue”, whether they are movie lines or coworkers’ names or just random words I want to use. It kind of makes me worry.

Seppo would say that it’s time for me to start playing Brain Age.

I started having the “bad memory” symptoms you talk about about 5 years ago. It really freaked me out at the time, but I’ve found that after the initial decline it hasn’t really gotten any worse. Now all my friends are catching up with where I’m already at. Hopefully that doesn’t mean that I’m due for another step down. :O

As far as I know, I have the best memory of anybody I’ve ever met. I’m kind of proud of it.

Although, to be fair, I might’ve forgotten meeting somebody with a better memory and that would kind of crush my ego (which only extends to my amazing memory).

I’ve had memory problems my whole life, but after reading that article it’s nice to know that they’re really more “attention” problems and not true memory problems.

For example, and Steph can confirm this, at least once a day I set something down and then *immediately* forget where I put it. It’s been much worse since we moved into the new house. I used to have a place for everything, to avoid this problem, but I guess I’m still trying to figure out the best spot for all of the little things.

It’s weird, because I have a really good long term memory, or at least I used to. In high school I would commit entire symphony concerts, and marching shows, to memory. I would often play through an entire performance without looking at any sheet music. Years later I still had many of the songs memorized, but after dusting off the horn a few weeks ago it turns out that I’ve forgotten almost all of them.

I went to my own homepage just now, saw the title of this entry and thought to myself, “When the hell did I post an entry about memory?”
