RIP iPod
On June 27, 2004 I received a beautiful little iPod from Seppo. It had a sweet, personal engraving. It was light and elegant. It was the most expensive piece of personal electronics I had ever owned to that date. It made it easier for me to enjoy my music. It had plenty of splace to carry around all the music I had and more. Its UI was simple and classic.
Yesterday, it died. I don’t know why. The last time it had some trauma was several days ago, at least. The harddrive died. It clicked, it rattled, it reset over and over again, and it overheated. I tried all the different solutions presented by iPod, iPodLounge, various websites and message boards. I ran multiple diagnostics tests. I even smacked it around. I opened it up and reconnected the parts, hoping that the problem was a loose connection; it wasn’t. The harddrive gave a little rattle that indicated that some crucial part was just not right.
Thanks for bringing me two solid years of good music listening. I’ll miss you.
Actually, it’s quite simple! 🙂 I already got the case open, so it’s just a matter of replacing it and formatting it.
But I don’t know if I want to spend money on a new drive when I already have a nano. Actually, I am pretty sure I don’t want to spend money on a new drive.
The drive costs a minimum of $100, and probably more like $130, all told. Given that that’s only $70 short of the cost of a refurb iPod video, there’s simply no point in replacing just the drive. Apple’s got quite a scheme going.
So, is the sentimental value of the iPod around $100-130, $70 or $200?
This advanced math always tripped me up.

2004… is that Gen 3 or 4?
When my iPod dies, I don’t know what I’ll do. I’d like to think I’d do some research about alternatives, and maybe start using my PSP. Archos makes a good product. But in the end, I’ll probably hop a train to the Apple Store in downtown and buy another one.

andre: It’s a Gen 3, purchased only about a week before the release of Gen 4. Those sneaks! 😀 I actually like the Gen 3s better.

I got a Gen 3 the week it came out (15GB). Every once in a while it’ll do something weird, but it’s still going strong.
The one thing that freaks me out (and has probably damaged my hearing) is that sometimes when I let the battery run all the way out and then recharge it, the music starts with the volume maxed out.
IIRC, you can replace the hard drive. It’s not simple, again IIRC, but maybe somebody more tech savvy can point you in the right direction or correct me.
